Regarding the “Era” shoe (NMAH 2016.0351.08), Steve van Doren recalled, “We named the shoe in 1976 the ‘Off the Wall’ skate shoe, because [Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta] were the ones who told us, ‘This is what we want to have to be off the wall.’ [The Vans’ slogan] came from coming out of pools off the wall.
