Summary
Paul E. Cox (1879-1968) received his B.S. (1905) in ceramic engineering from New York State College. After working in private companies for several years, he became a ceramics technician (1910-1918) at the H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College (Tulane University) and also worked for a French ceramics company (1918-1920). Cox came to Iowa State College (University) as Associate Professor (1920-1926); Acting Head (1920-1926); and Professor and Department Head (1926-1939) of the Ceramic Engineering Department. Cox promoted the Department tirelessly and educated many Iowans about ceramics, and encouraged the development of a ceramics industry in Iowa. Cox moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he died in 1968. This collection contains biographical materials and articles written by Cox regarding ceramics in Iowa. The papers also include information about the Cox Kiln, a special kiln built to fire the large panels used in Iowa State College (University) artist, Christian Petersen's "History of Dairying Mural," (ca. 1934). In addition, correspondence with ceramics industries and others is part of the collection and discusses ceramic materials, types of kilns, industry and business relating to Iowa State.
